Diabetic Foot Care Instuctions
- Examine both feet carefully every day for injury such as blisters, cuts, bruises,
calluses, or infection.
- Use a mirror to see your feet or have someone else at home check your feet.
- Report; injuries promptly to our office and be sure to follow Dr. Stancil’s recommendations
carefully.
- It is important to keep your feet clean. Bathe them daily in warm (NOT HOT)
water. Dry carefully, especially between the toes, with facial tissue.
- To preserve circulation, do not smoke.
- Wear properly fitted clean socks. Do not use stockings with tight elastic bands.
- Soft leather shoes are best for daily wear. Shoes should be comfortable at the time
of purchase. News shoes should be worn for short periods at first. Check your feet
frequently with new shoes.
- Avoid extremes of temperature, either hot or cold. Test water with a thermometer
before bathing. Water temperature should not exceed 105 degrees.
- DO NOT use chemicals on your feet or medicated pads. Also, many home remedies
are dangerous!
- If your feet are cold at night, wear loose wool or cotton socks. Do not apply hot
water bottles or heating pads.
- DO NOT cross your legs while sitting, as this will reduce circulation to
one leg.
- Ask for help if you find it hard to take care of your feet.
- DO NOT trim calluses or thickened toenails by yourself or by a family member,
as this is very dangerous.
- Have your feet examined regularly by Dr. Stancil.
